Why Your Protective Styles Aren’t Helping Your Hair Grow (And How to Fix It)

Why Your Protective Styles Aren’t Helping Your Hair Grow (And How to Fix It)

Why Your Protective Styles Aren’t Helping Your Hair Grow

Most people wash their hair right before a protective style appointment, but skip the most important part: proper moisture.

.

That’s where the problem starts….

 THE REAL PROBLEM

Most people love to focus on the style...

Not the condition of the hair going into it...

And that's exactly why breakage happens.

If your hair isn’t fully moisturized before it’s braided, twisted, or tucked away, it becomes more fragile. That means it’s more likely to break during installation, or worse, when you take the style down weeks later.

And here’s the frustrating part….

Your hair is growing while it’s in that protective style. Hence, new growth!

But if it breaks off during takedown, you’ll never actually see that growth.

Your hair is growing in it's protective styles...but breakage during takedown is why you never see it.

How to Properly Prep Your Hair Before a Protective Style

If you want your protective styles to actually help you retain length, your prep routine has to change.

Here’s what to do instead:

1. Start with clean hair

Wash your hair thoroughly to remove buildup and create a clean foundation.

2. Apply a moisturizing product generously

Don’t be light-handed here. Your hair should feel soft and hydrated, not dry or stiff.

3. Seal in the moisture with an oil

This step locks everything in and helps prevent dryness while your hair is tucked away.

4. Dry your hair before your appointment

Blow dry or air dry, just make sure your hair isn’t left damp going into the style.

Why I Don’t Rely on Salon Prep Alone

Even though I love a good salon wash, I always prep my hair myself beforehand. The truth is, many stylists focus on getting the style done, not on fully moisturizing your hair before installation. Over time, that lack of moisture leads to dryness and breakage.

Doing this step yourself gives you control over your hair's health

The Real Key to Retaining Length

Protective styles don’t grow your hair, they help you retain it. But that only works if your hair is properly moisturized before it’s styled.

When you take the time to prep your hair the right way, you’ll notice the difference:

  • Less breakage
  • Softer hair after takedown
  • And actual, visible length retention over time

If they require that they wash your hair, simply don’t use their service and book with someone else. Do not sacrifice your hair health for their comfort.
